Generator Hours Tell You More Than Engine Hours

Everyone asks for engine hours. The genset meter is the one that quietly tells you how the boat was actually used.

Ask for both meters. A boat showing 900 engine hours and 7,200 generator hours has not been lightly used. It has been lived on, and that wears a completely different set of parts.

What do generator hours tell you about a boat?

They tell you how the boat was used, not how far it went. Engine hours measure travel. Genset hours measure time aboard with the air conditioning on, and those two numbers drifting apart is the single most useful pattern in a listing.

That last row deserves a word. Boats hate sitting. A 12-year-old boat with 300 hours has had a dozen seasons of seals drying out, fuel ageing and raw-water impellers hardening in place. Low hours are only good news alongside evidence the boat was run and serviced.

Why gensets rack up hours so fast

A marine genset runs at fixed engine speed under near-constant load, and it runs whenever the air conditioning does. In Florida between June and September, that is most of the time the owner is aboard.

Do the arithmetic. Two weekends a month, Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, is about 48 hours of running per weekend if nobody shuts it down overnight. Call it 1,100 to 1,500 hours a year. Three seasons of that and you have added more hours to the genset than most owners put on their mains in a decade.

Expect 8,000 to 12,000 hours from a well-maintained unit before a serious overhaul. Some go further. Plenty do not, especially if the previous owner treated oil changes as optional because the thing was, in their words, only the generator.

What it costs when it goes

This is the part worth pricing before you offer, because it is entirely predictable.

  • Rebuild, 8 to 13 kW class: $6,000 to $12,000
  • Replacement including removal and commissioning: $18,000 to $30,000
  • Sound shield and mounts if the old ones are perished: add $1,500 to $3,000

The replacement figure surprises people, and it is almost always the labour. On a lot of mid-size boats the genset went in before the saloon sole did, which means getting it out involves cutting or dismantling joinery. Ask the yard for a look before you assume it lifts out.

Reading the meter honestly

Two practical checks, both quick.

Photograph the genset hour meter yourself at the viewing. Not a number the seller reads out, not a figure in the ad. Meters get replaced, and a fresh-looking meter on a 15-year-old unit is a question worth asking.

Then pull the service log and divide. If the log shows six oil changes against 7,000 hours, the unit was serviced every 1,100 hours or so, against a manufacturer interval that is usually 150 to 250. That is not a maintenance record. That is a countdown.

The honest take

High genset hours are not a reason to walk. They are a reason to negotiate with a number in hand.

A boat with 7,000 hours on the genset has a $20,000-ish item coming due, maybe not this year, probably within your ownership. That is a legitimate discount to argue for, and unlike most survey findings it is difficult for a seller to dispute, because the meter says what it says.

What would worry me more is the opposite pattern: a genset with almost no hours on a boat that has clearly been cruised hard. Either the meter is new, or the unit has sat unused for years, and a marine diesel that has not run in three seasons is not a bonus. It is a project you have not priced.
