Can Your Truck Legally Tow It? Do the Arithmetic First
Half-ton trucks run out of payload long before they run out of tow rating. Here is the sum that matters.

The number in the brochure is the one that misleads people. Your truck's tow rating assumes a driver, no passengers, no cargo and an ideal hitch. Load the family and a cooler and the honest capacity drops fast.
Three numbers decide this, and payload usually fails first.
How do I know if my truck can tow my boat?
Open the driver's door and read the yellow sticker. It gives payload, and it is specific to your truck rather than to the model.
Then work through this:
- 01Loaded trailer weight. Boat, trailer, full fuel, water, batteries, gear, and the outboard. Not the dry weight in the brochure.
- 02Tongue weight, 7 to 10 percent of that for a boat trailer. Subtract it from payload.
- 03Everyone and everything in the truck. Passengers, dog, cooler, tools. Subtract that too.
- 04What is left must not be negative. That is the test most rigs fail.
- 05Gross combined weight rating. Truck at its actual loaded weight plus loaded trailer must stay under GCWR.
Notice the tow rating only appears at step five. It is real, and it is rarely the binding constraint on a half-ton.
A worked example
Half-ton crew cab, payload 1,480 pounds on the sticker. Towing a 24-foot centre console.

You are 114 pounds inside payload with nothing else in the truck. Add a fifth passenger and you are over. The tow rating on that truck might be 9,000 pounds and completely irrelevant.
This is why so many trailer-boat owners end up in a three-quarter-ton. Not because the boat got heavier, but because the arithmetic never worked in the first place.
The weights people forget
Fuel. Gasoline is about 6 pounds a gallon. A 90-gallon tank is 540 pounds, and boats are usually weighed dry.
Water. 8.3 pounds a gallon. A 40-gallon freshwater tank is 330 pounds.
The outboard. Some published dry weights exclude it. A 300 hp four-stroke is around 600 pounds on its own, and twins double that.
Everything in the lockers. Anchor and chain, safety gear, a couple of coolers, tubes and skis. Four hundred pounds is a conservative allowance for a family boat, and I have weighed rigs where it was double.
Brakes, and the thing that actually kills people
Most states require trailer brakes over a gross weight threshold, commonly 3,000 pounds. Surge brakes are near-universal on boat trailers because they work without wiring into the tow vehicle and survive being dunked.
Check they work rather than that they exist. Surge actuators corrode, and a boat trailer that has been backed into salt water for ten seasons has had a hard life in exactly the place you cannot see.
If you take one thing from this: sway is a load-distribution problem far more than a speed problem. Too little tongue weight causes it, and it is the failure mode that puts trailers across the median. Aim for the top of that 7 to 10 percent band rather than the bottom.
The practical shortcut
Take the rig to a public weighbridge, loaded as you would actually travel, and weigh it.
It costs about fifteen dollars and it replaces every estimate above with a fact. Almost nobody does this, and everybody who has done it once has been surprised by the number.
